Helping to serve your community, Chris Evans MP Help Shape Britains Progressive Future

2nd December 2016 - ‘Government should be ashamed over food bank use’ says Islwyn MP

‘Government should be ashamed over food bank use’ says Islwyn MPThe MP for Islwyn, Chris Evans, has launched a damning attack on Government policy as he visited a food bank appeal at the Tesco superstore in Risca.

According to the Trussel Trust, which operates 428 food banks across the country, a record 1.1 million three day emergency food supplies were given to people in crisis between April 2015-2016.

After helping with the collection, Mr Evans said: ‘The Government should hang their heads in shame. Their welfare policy and delayed social security payments, as well as low incomes, account for well over half of referrals made to the Trussell Trust’s foodbanks.

‘Until the Government gets a grip on this national scandal, people in Risca, across my constituency and around the country will continue to need emergency food supplies from foodbanks.

‘The record demand means that donations matter now more than ever before. Every can really does help to people in need. I would encourage anyone willing and able to make a donation or volunteer some time for, their local food bank.’
