Helping to serve your community, Chris Evans MP Help Shape Britains Progressive Future

5th September 2016 - ‘Read a book to feed your imagination and learn something new’ says Islwyn MP

‘Read a book to feed your imagination and learn something new’ says Islwyn MPThe Member of Parliament for Islwyn, Chris Evans, has encouraged his constituents to get into the spirit of National Read a Book Day 2016, which takes place on September 6th, by reading something new.

Whether factual or fictional, books can have a measurable positive impact on health and education. According to the OECD, young people who read for up to 30 minutes a day have a performance boost equivalent to over one year of schooling compared with non-reading peers.

OECD research also found a link between literacy and depression. Only 20% of people with high literacy skills surveyed had symptoms associated with depression, compared with 36% of those with low literacy.

Mr Evans said: ‘Reading and literacy skills have measurable benefits to health, education and job prospects and I would encourage all of my constituents to celebrate ‘Read a Book Day’.

‘It has never been easier to pick up a book and feed your imagination, whether that is for free at a local Library, or bought from a local bookstore or charity shop. It is even possible now to download eBooks to read on a tablet or computer from the comfort of your own home.

‘There is an enormous range of fiction on offer to be immersed in, as well as new skills, ideas and knowledge to be gained from non-fiction books. There truly is something out there for everyone to enjoy and be inspired by.’
