6th July 2016 - Islwyn MP encourages constituents to volunteer for people with MND
The Member of Parliament for Islwyn, Chris Evans, has called on his constituents to volunteer for the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association after being re-elected as Secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Group for the disease.
Volunteers for the MND Association contribute towards the support and services provided by the association to people with MND and their families. They also take part in raising awareness of the condition.
The disease, which affects up to 5,000 people in the UK at any one time, has no cure, and results in death for a third of those diagnosed with it within a year, and half within two years. Those interested in donating their time, or making a financial donation, to the MND Association can visit their website at www.mndassociation.org.
Mr Evans said: ‘I cannot imagine the devastation a person and family must feel when they are diagnosed with MND. Many suffering from the disease die very quickly but others, including the world-renowned Professor Stephen Hawking, can live on for many years and live a productive life if given the right support.
‘The MND Association relies on its volunteers to help campaign and raise awareness of the condition, provide vital support to those with MND and their families, and raise funding to ensure support services can continue to be delivered.
‘I am greatly honoured to have been re-elected as Secretary of the APPG on MND and I will continue as I have done to raise awareness of MND issues and ensure the interests and support of those with MND are not only protected but strengthened.’
