Helping to serve your community, Chris Evans MP Help Shape Britains Progressive Future

6th December 2016 - ‘War widows deserve pension justice’ says Islwyn MP

‘Government should be ashamed over food bank use’ says Islwyn MPThe MP for Islwyn, Chris Evans, has said that the widows of war veterans deserve justice after throwing his support behind a campaign to stop war widows being forced to relinquish their pension after remarrying.

Under current rules, a widow must relinquish the pension they receive if they married their spouses between 1973 and 2005, even though those who married before and after don’t have to. However a campaign, led by Alyn and Deeside AM Carl Sargeant and war widow Kath Webster, seeks to introduce a pension for life regardless of marriage date or when their spouses lost their lives.

Mr Evans said: ‘It is unfair and unjust that widows and widowers of service personnel killed in action must relinquish pensions if they want to remarry, just because they married or their spouse lost their lives between certain years.

‘I would strongly encourage my constituents to back this petition and campaign to give war widows the justice and compensation they deserve.’
