Helping to serve your community, Chris Evans MP Help Shape Britains Progressive Future

9th March 2017 - ‘This budget is an attack on our small business owners’ says Islwyn MP

‘This budget is an attack on our small business owners’ says Islwyn MPThe MP for Islwyn, Chris Evans, has hit out against the at the Chancellor’s 2017 Budget during a speech in Parliament after it was announced that the self-employed will be hit with tax increases.

Measures contained in the 2017 Budget included a rise in Class-4 National Insurance contributions for self-employed workers and business owners from 9% to 11% starting in April 2018. The Federation of Small Businesses estimate that 4.8 million people could be affected by this change, including 3,300 in Islwyn.

Tax free allowances on dividends will be decreasing from £5,000 to £2,000, meaning owners and shareholders of limited companies who invest and receive dividend payments will receive a large tax increase.

Mr Evans said: ‘The Budget was a huge disappointment. What should have been a road map for how we leave the European Union was instead the Tory party patting itself on the back and saying how wonderful it thinks it is doing.

‘This budget will take money out of the small businessman’s pocket. We are not talking about Facebook, Costa, Google or Starbucks. We are talking about the local painter, the decorator, the tradesman, the greengrocer and the IT set-up. Those people who, day to day, take risks and run our economy.

‘I was expecting something better. Britain deserves better, and business above all deserves better than what it got today.’
