Helping to serve your community, Chris Evans MP Help Shape Britains Progressive Future

9th September 2016 - Islwyn MP backs campaign to bring back local post office

Islwyn MP backs campaign to bring back local post officeThe Member of Parliament for Islwyn, Chris Evans, has thrown his support behind a campaign to bring a Post Office back to Pontllanfraith after recent closures and will deliver a petition to the Post Office chief executive.

Pontllanfraith Labour councillors Mike Adams, Colin Gordon and Gez Kirby launched the petition in August after Post Offices on Commercial Street, Pontllanfraith alongside the nearby Fleur De Lys Avenue, Pentllwyn closed leaving residents without access to the important services they provide.

Islwyn’s MP will now deliver the petition, which has attracted 258 written and 186 online signatures, to the Chief Executive of the Post Office requesting that the company listens to local residents’ concerns and restores vital services to local residents as soon as possible.

Mr Evans said: ‘I am very pleased to have received this petition from residents who are very deeply concerned because they have no local Post Office. The number of signatures are a testament to the strength of local feeling about this important issue.

‘I will be doing everything I can on their behalf to ensure that the Post Office listens and acts quickly to restore the crucial services the people of Pontllanfraith need and deserve.’

Cllr Kirby said: ‘The closure of the two Post Office branches in Pontllanfraith has forced many people in my community, including those with mobility issues, to travel further and further to use their services.

‘Both branches were popular in the community. The number of signatures we gathered shows how strong demand is for a Post Office to return to the village. I thank Chris for his support in our campaign.’

The online petition is still available online at https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/we-want-our-pontllanfraith-post-office-back.
