11th July 2017 - Islwyn MP hits out at government’s ‘failed economic policies’

Islwyn MP hits out at government’s ‘failed economic policiesThe MP for Islwyn, Chris Evans, has used a Westminster Hall debate in Parliament to highlight the government’s economic failures.

Called for by Mark Harper, Conservative MP for Forest of Dean, the debate held this morning focussed on rebalancing the public finances. However the Islwyn MP hit out at the government’s failure to reduce the deficit and promote growth and productivity in the economy.

Mr Evans said: ‘This Tory government is good at congratulating themselves on the way they are running the economy. Instead it is clear that the Tories’ economic policies have failed and it is ordinary families across the country who are bearing the cost.

‘Austerity has failed to bring down the deficit, and monetary policies including low interest rates have helped to mask inherent weaknesses in the economy such as low productivity and demand.

‘What this country needs is real investment in people and in infrastructure, and the government will not rebalance the public finances until it does this. We should be supporting small and medium businesses to grow and take advantage of the new opportunities available to them in the modern world.

‘We need a strong industrial strategy which attracts investment in manufacturing and skills growth, to enable the UK to compete more effectively and seize opportunities in the global economy.’
