Helping to serve your community, Chris Evans MP Help Shape Britains Progressive Future

12th October 2016 - ‘There is no place in Wales for hate’ says Islwyn MP

‘There is no place in Wales for hate’ says Islwyn MPIslwyn MP Chris Evans has said that hate crime has no place in Wales as part of Hate Crime Awareness week 2016 which this year takes place between 8th and 15th October.

Hate crime is an illegal act of hostility towards someone because of who or what they represent. Acts of hate crime can include physical abuse, acting in a threatening manner, damaging property, non-verbal offensive gestures or insults.

According to the National Police Chiefs’ Council, reports of hate crime rose by 42% across England and Wales after the result of the Referendum on the UK’s Membership of the European Union.

Anyone who feels someone is committing an act of hate crime against them because of who they are or what they represent, whether that is race, religion, creed, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other character trait should take action.

Those who feel they are in imminent physical danger are urged to call 999. For non-violent incidents or for non-immediate or life threatening cases, victims are encouraged to call 101.

Mr Evans said: ‘Wales is a beautiful country, with a strong and friendly society. Yet over the past few months, for various reasons, incidents of hate crime have been on the increase. Each and every one of us has a duty to act wherever we see it.

‘Hate crimes have no place in Wales. It is not part of who we are as a civilised nation and society and we should not and must never stand for it. I would strongly encourage anyone who has been a victim of hate crime, or witness another person becoming a victim of hate crime, to report it to the police immediately.’
