Helping to serve your community, Chris Evans MP Help Shape Britains Progressive Future

14th September 2016 - Islwyn MP urges Post Office action to prevent closures

Islwyn MP urges Post Office action to prevent closuresIslwyn MP Chris Evans has called on the Post Office to take action to avoid branch closures by providing commercial help to struggling branches at a debate in Parliament.

Post Office closures in Wales were the topic of the Westminster Hall debate, which took place on Tuesday 13th September. The Islwyn MP made the point that some branches fail as they do not receive enough commercial assistance or business advice from the Post Office and urged the company to provide more support.

The Islwyn MP also paid tribute to a campaign, run by local Pontllanfraith Councillors Gez Kirby, Mike Adams and Colin Gordon to return a Post Office to the community after recent closures, which has attracted more than 440 backers.

Mr Evans said: ‘Post Offices are closing across Wales and the whole country. In my own constituency several have closed or come near to closing over the past several years after becoming financially unviable.

‘One of the reasons I hear the most about why postmasters running a branch are struggling financially is that they do not feel they receive enough commercial help from the Post Office to keep their business afloat.

‘When a Post Office closes, many vital services are lost along with it which means local residents – especially the most vulnerable – lose out. If the Post Office improves the way it provides help to postmasters, it could stop further closures.

‘If real action was taken, I think potential postmasters would be given the confidence they need to open new branches, for example in places like Pontllanfraith where there are none.’
