Helping to serve your community, Chris Evans MP Help Shape Britains Progressive Future

14th December 2017 - Islwyn MP and AM demand answers and action over environmental permit

Islwyn MP and AM demand answers and action over environmental permitThe Member of Parliament, Chris Evans, and Assembly Member, Rhianon Passmore, for Islwyn have demanded answers and action from the Welsh Government over a controversial environmental permit.

Prompted by Monday’s decision by the Planning Inspectorate to grant on appeal an environmental permit for a controversial waste recycling plant in Cwmfelinfach, the politicians held an urgent meeting with the Welsh Government Minister for Environment, Hannah Blythyn AM today.

In a joint statement, Mr Evans and Ms Passmore said:

‘At the meeting we expressed our very serious concerns that NRW had withdrawn their opposition to the site based on suspiciously revised pollution data provided by Hazrem and the manufacturer of their equipment.

‘This data has not been independently verified and, given that it has changed so dramatically from the original submission, should not be the basis for a decision that could substantially impact the health and wellbeing of residents and future generations in an area where there is already evidence of ill health and a vulnerable population.

‘Further to this we are utterly dismayed that the Planning Inspectorate does not consider the needs of those living near the monitoring point at 80 Islwyn Road to be of sufficient importance as to reject Hazrem’s appeal. It seems clear that the community voice, which spoke loudly against this plant, has been totally ignored in a callous dismissal of their very real concerns.

‘Residents are not only worried for their health, and that of their children, but also the negative effect this waste plant will have on their house prices.

‘The Minister has agreed to call in Natural Resources Wales to ask them why they did not defend, at appeal, their original decision to reject the environmental permit. She has also agreed to look into residents concerns regarding possible negative effects on their house prices.’
