Helping to serve your community, Chris Evans MP Help Shape Britains Progressive Future

14th December 2017 - Islwyn MP backs Guide Dogs' campaign to end pavement parking.

Islwyn MP backs Guide Dogs' campaign to end pavement parking. The MP for Islwyn, Chris Evans, met with staff, volunteers and puppies at Guide Dogs UK’s Parliamentary Christmas event this week, which was hosted to show thanks to MPs for their support throughout 2017.

At the event, Mr Evans met with Amit and his guide dog Kika, as well as puppies who are in the midst of their training to become seeing-eye dogs. Mr Evans was also presented with a card and a gift of a miniature Christmas stocking decoration, which contained messages highlighting the importance of Guide Dogs’ campaign to end pavement parking.

When cars are parked on pavements, it can pose great difficulties for people who are blind or partially sighted. A survey by Guide Dogs found that 90% of respondents had experienced problems with pavement parking, resulting in them having to walk in the road and put themselves at risk of serious injury, or worse.

Speaking after the event, Mr Evans said: ‘I had met with staff from Guide Dogs earlier this year, so it was great to catch up with the team and meet some their four-legged members.

‘Pavement parking has been a real problem all across the country – including my constituency of Islwyn. Not only does it pose a threat to those with sight loss, but also makes it difficult for parents with prams or people in wheelchairs and mobility scooters to get past.

‘It is high time that there was a change in the law – motorists must stop treating pavements as just another place to park their car. The Government needs to work with local councils to ensure that there are more designated parking areas across communities so that motorists do not feel the need to leave their cars parked on pavements.’
