15th August 2016 - ‘Explore First World War history with a grant’, says Islwyn MP
The Member of Parliament for Islwyn, Chris Evans, has encouraged local residents to apply for a community grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to explore the stories of the First World War to mark the Centenary of the Battle of the Somme.
Residents can apply for grants ranging between £3,000 and £10,000 out of a £4 million fund, provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund, available for communities looking to explore, conserve and share local heritage of the First World War.
Across the country, 1,520 First World War projects are already taking place using Heritage Lottery funding including local people in Tottenham and Walthamstow in London exploring their family history for relatives who fought in the war and young people from North Tyneside using social media to share stories of local soldiers.
Mr Evans said: ‘A hundred years on from the Battle of the Somme, it is as important as it has ever been to learn and remember the incredible stories of service and sacrifice shown by soldiers and civilians during the First World War.
‘That’s why it is so important that we uncover as many of these stories as we can and preserve them so that younger generations may learn of their ancestors’ service and their sacrifice, and be inspired by it.
‘Heritage Lottery funding helps local communities to realise this goal and I would strongly encourage anyone in Islwyn or South East Wales with an idea for a project to get in touch with the Heritage Lottery Fund.’
