Helping to serve your community, Chris Evans MP Help Shape Britains Progressive Future

17th March 2017 - ‘It is vital to counter radicalisation from returning Daesh fighters’ says Islwyn MP

‘It is vital to counter radicalisation from returning Daesh fighters’ says Islwyn MPThe MP for Islwyn, Chris Evans, has called on the government to work with international partners to counter radicalisation from Daesh fighters returning from Iraq and Syria once the terror organisation has been defeated

Mr Evans asked the question during a counter Daesh update to Parliament by the International Development Secretary Priti Patel.

According to the Defence Secretary Michael Fallon, approximately 850 people from the UK have travelled to Syria and Iraq to fight for Daesh and about half may have returned.

Mr Evans said: ‘It is very concerning that there may already be 400 people in the UK, including some from Wales, who have been radicalised enough to risk their lives and travel to Iraq or Syria to fight for Daesh.

‘Daesh is losing more territory every day. This raises the spectre that even more people from the UK who have travelled there could return and attempt to carry on their fight in British towns and cities.

‘It is vital to our defence and national security that these people are not given any opportunity to radicalise others and bring terror with them on their return. We can only achieve this if we work closely with our international partners and allies.’
