Helping to serve your community, Chris Evans MP Help Shape Britains Progressive Future

17th October 2017 - ‘Government must clamp down on British terror fighters’ says Islwyn MP

‘Government must clamp down on British terror fighters’ says Islwyn MPChris Evans, the Member of Parliament for Islwyn, has said that the government should clamp down on British citizens who travel abroad to fight for terrorist organisations.

During Foreign Office Questions today, Mr Evans asked whether the Government can guarantee that people trained by terrorist groups such as al-Shabaab cannot return to the UK and if they do return, that the authorities will clamp down on them.

Al-Shabaab, which was responsible for a devastating truck bombing on Saturday in Mogadishu, Somalia, which killed 300 people and injured hundreds more, have previously recruited fighters from the UK including Thomas Evans and Samantha Lewthwaite. The pair were killed while fighting for the terror group in 2015.

Mr Evans said: ‘I give my condolences to the people of Mogadishu who were the victims of a truck bombing on Saturday. Al-Shabaab have claimed responsibility.

‘The same group has recruited fighters from this country, including Thomas Evans and Samantha Lewthwaite.

‘What guarantee can the Minister give to our people that those British citizens who are trained by terrorist groups like al-Shabaab are not allowed back into this country, and if they do attempt to come back to this country, that the authorities will clamp down on them.’

In response, the Minister of State at the Foreign Office, Rory Stewart MP, said: ‘I would like to reinforce how horrifying the attack is and what a threat al-Shabaab pose to Somalia, the region and the UK, and our absolute abhorrence and determination to clamp down on any British citizen who involves themselves with a group of such extreme horror.’
