Helping to serve your community, Chris Evans MP Help Shape Britains Progressive Future

18th November 2016 - Islwyn MP throws his support behind boundary review amendment Bill

Islwyn MP throws his support behind boundary review amendment BillChris Evans, the MP for Islwyn, has welcomed today’s progression of a Bill which would make significant changes to the ongoing constituency Boundary Review.

The Parliamentary Constituencies (Amendment) Bill, introduced by Labour MP Pat Glass, seeks to undo Government plans to reduce the number of MPs from 650 to 600 and would allow the Boundary Commission to redraw constituencies based on newer electoral registers.

The Bill passed second reading by 253 votes to 37 and will now be scrutinised by MPs at Committee Stage.

Under current proposals revealed by the Boundary Commission for Wales, which is undergoing public consultation, the number of MPs in Wales will be reduced from 40 to 29.

Mr Evans said: ‘The Government’s plans to cut the number of MPs from 650 to 600 is clearly a cynical and partisan move to gerrymander constituencies and harm The Labour Party, particularly in areas like Wales. Democracy in Wales pays the price.

‘I welcome the result today and I will continue to support the Bill and the amendments it contains. It simply makes no sense to cut the number of MPs and cite cost as a justification while at the same time bloating the unelected House of Lords with new appointees.

‘In the meantime, I would strongly encourage my constituents to register their dissatisfaction with the current proposals and contribute towards the Boundary Commission for Wales’ public consultation.’
