Helping to serve your community, Chris Evans MP Help Shape Britains Progressive Future

20th September 2016 - ‘Seek advice to avoid problem gambling consequences’, says Islwyn MP

Islwyn MP invites local politics students to enter video competitionThe MP for Islwyn, Chris Evans, has warned of the dangers of gambling from home on portable devices after throwing his support behind the Citizens Advice Gambling Support Service.

According to Citizens Advice, the majority of gamblers do so at home and portable devices are the most popular way to gamble. Vulnerable groups such as young people are at a higher risk of experiencing gambling related harm.

The Gambling Advice Service urges anyone who feels they might have a problem with gambling to get in touch. Examples of problem gambling include placing increasingly large bets to feel the same excitement and repeatedly gambling in an attempt to win back money lost.

Those concerned they may have a problem with gambling, or think they know someone who might have a problem with gambling, should contact Newport Citizens Advice Gambling Support Service on 01633 222622 or visit their website www.newportcab.org.uk.

Mr Evans, who was once a bookmaker, said: ‘Citizens Advice provide an excellent service and I strongly encourage anyone who feels they might have a problem with excessive gambling to come forward. Citizens Advice advisers are non-judgemental and their helpful advice can turn lives around.

‘Problem gambling is a growing concern as it becomes easier and easier to bet from the comfort of a sofa on laptops, mobiles and tablet computers. Technology has brought slot machines and bookies’ shops right onto people’s laps.

‘Gambling can be enjoyable in moderation, but in too many circumstances problem gambling leads to severe financial consequences. This can lead to huge stress, family breakdown, work issues and poverty.’
