21st July 2016 - Islwyn MP calls for regional plan in place of LDP
The MP for Islwyn, Chris Evans, has welcomed an announcement by Caerphilly County Borough Council to scrap its draft Local Development Plan after the proposals met considerable opposition and has called for a regional plan.
The plans, intended to control development and land use up to 2031, included several major developments including thousands of new homes. An estimated 1,800 new homes, a new Primary school and bypass were planned for the village of Maesycwmmer.
On Tuesday Caerphilly County Borough Councillors voted unanimously to withdraw the plans following a public consultation.
Mr Evans said: ‘While there is a need for additional housing and commercial areas to be built in my constituency, it seems clear that long-term planning must take place at a more strategic level across the whole region.
‘I know that many of my constituents in Maesycwmmer as well as Blackwood and Newbridge opposed elements of the draft local development plan due to excessive use of greenfield land while so many brownfield sites could be used.
‘I would also like to pay tribute to the local councillors who joined with residents in opposing the plans during the consultation period. I would also like to thank the residents groups who met with me to discuss this and the work they put in to protect greenbelt land in their communities.’
