21st September 2016 - Islwyn MP invites local students to show funny side for competition

Islwyn MP invites local students to show funny side for competitionIslwyn MP Chris Evans has invited local primary and secondary school students to show off their funny side in a joke-telling competition, run by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT), to raise awareness about communication skills.

The ‘Voice Box’ competition, which is run by the RCSLT in partnership with The Communication Trust, aims to highlight the importance of communication as a crucial life skill. Entries must be submitted before 1st December. The winning pupil will receive an iPad mini while two runners up will receive £50 in national book tokens.

According to the RCSLT, seven percent of children aged around five years have a specific speech and language impairment and a further 1.8% have speech, language and communication needs linked to other conditions, such as a learning disability, cerebral palsy and autism spectrum disorders.

Mr Evans said: ‘Sometimes it is easy to take our ability to communicate with each other for granted. Yet communication skills are absolutely vital and can significantly affect a child’s life chances and whether they reach their potential.

‘Many children across the country have issues with developing their communication skills. It is important we become more aware of this and give them our support they need to achieve their potential.

‘I hope as many local schools as possible get into the spirit of the competition and come up with some very funny jokes. I would like to wish all local pupils who enter into the competition the very best of luck.’

Further information about the competition alongside a toolkit for schools wishing to take part can be found online at www.givingvoiceuk.org.
