24th November 2017 - Islwyn MP slams ‘failure’ budget

‘Be A Nice Guy’ this Halloween, says Islwyn MPChris Evans, the Member of Parliament for Islwyn, has hit out at the budget statement delivered by the Chancellor of the Exchequer on Wednesday, and called for reforms.

In the House of Commons, Mr Evans called for an end to the public sector pay cap, more focus on the consequences of Brexit, and banking reform. He also hit out at the government’s proposals to end stamp duty payable on houses under the value of £300,000 alongside falls in growth forecasts and productivity.

Speaking after the debate, Mr Evans said: ‘This budget could have been so much more and should be seen as a failure. The Chancellor had plenty of self-congratulatory rhetoric on offer but very little action. We need radical change.

‘The removal of stamp duty on houses under the value of £300,000 fails under scrutiny. The Office of Budget Responsibility has already said the policy may lead to a rise in house prices which is bad news for first time buyers. They would have benefited more from additional help saving for deposits in the first place.

‘Meanwhile productivity remains stagnant, public sector pay is frozen and growth forecasts have been dramatically reduced to historic lows until at least 2022. We heard no answers to this or about the government’s economic plan for the consequences of leaving the European Union.

‘More can and should have been included in this budget, and I hope the government can get its act together. Only through radical reform will they begin to turn the economy around and improve the lives of my constituents and people across the country.’
