24th November 2016 - Islwyn MP hits out at ‘failure’ budget

Islwyn MP hits out at ‘failure’ budgetThe MP for Islwyn, Chris Evans, has hit out at government failures after the Autumn Budget announcement.

While delivering the Autumn Budget, the Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond admitted that the government would miss its target and Conservative manifesto commitment to a budget surplus by 2018-19.

However the Chancellor has dropped this commitment stating: “In view of uncertainty facing the economy, and in the face of slower growth forecasts, we no longer seek to deliver a surplus in 2019-20.”

Mr Evans said: ‘It is extraordinary that a Conservative Government which won over so many people in the 2015 election by promising to put an end to the budget deficit by 2019-20 has failed so spectacularly to do so.

‘Although the Government is keen to point out that uncertainty relating to the UK’s vote to leave the European Union is a factor, they do not mention that the then-Chancellor George Osborne had already began pushing back targets more than a year before the referendum. They utterly failed to ‘fix the roof while the sun was shining’.

It is becoming clear that the people’s trust has been put in the wrong hands. Cutting back essential services and spending for example on Disability Living Allowance and Personal Independence Payments has been proven to be the wrong way to bring down the deficit.

‘If the government does not act soon to invest more and encourage growth and new jobs, I fear that life will only become even more difficult not only for my own constituents but people across Wales and the whole of the UK.’
