25th October 2016 - Islwyn MP says Wales needs trade ambassador and industrial strategy

Islwyn MP says Wales needs trade ambassador and industrial strategyThe MP for Islwyn has called on the UK and Welsh governments to appoint a dedicated trade ambassador to negotiate trade deals abroad and set out an industrial strategy for Wales after the UK leaves the European Union.

According to the Welsh Government, Wales exported £4.7 billion in goods and services to EU countries in the year to the second quarter of 2016 and a further £7.3 billion outside of the EU.

Surveying small and medium sized manufacturing and engineering businesses, the MHA and Lloyds Bank found 36 per cent perceive the UKs upcoming exit from the EU, and uncertainty surrounding it, to be a barrier to growth.

Mr Evans said: ‘Wales and the UK as a whole have voted to leave the European Union and that is the reality we face and must accept. The UK and Welsh Governments now have an immense opportunity and a duty to make ‘Brexit’ work for Wales.

‘Our country has immense potential but it will only be realised if we have the tools to do it. That means we need a dedicated Trade Ambassador for Wales to fight our corner in future trade deals.

‘The Welsh Government must also do everything within its power to encourage entrepreneurialism in Wales and establish a clear industrial strategy for Wales. Only with clear plans will our country be able to prosper once we have left the European Union.’
