Helping to serve your community, Chris Evans MP Help Shape Britains Progressive Future

27th Septmeber 2016 - ‘Make simple changes to keep warm this autumn and winter’, says Islwyn MP

‘Make simple changes to keep warm this autumn and winter’, says Islwyn MPIslwyn MP Chris Evans has encouraged his elderly constituents to make simple changes which can keep energy bills down and homes warm as autumn begins and temperatures start to drop.

Every year people across the country struggle with the cost of heating their homes. According to Age UK, elderly people are particularly vulnerable as last winter alone, a staggering 40,800 older people in England and Wales died unnecessarily from cold-related conditions such as heart attacks and strokes. This is one every seven minutes.

High energy costs are the biggest reason elderly people struggle to heat their homes. However costs can be reduced significantly through making simple changes. Elderly people should check with their supplier that they are getting the best deal, compare energy prices between suppliers and switch if they find a better deal elsewhere.

Draught excluders and simple actions like keeping doors and curtains closed can also help improve home insulation and bring down heating bills.

Further information on how to save energy, pay less and keep warm this winter can be found online on the Energy Saving Trust website www.energysavingtrust.org.uk

Mr Evans said: ‘It is a scandal that so many elderly people suffer every year because they cannot afford to heat their homes. Everyone deserves a warm home and it is surprising how much money can be saved by taking simple steps.

‘Age UK and the Energy Saving Trust provide vital tips and advice and I strongly encourage anyone who feels they might benefit to visit their website or get in touch with them.

‘Until energy prices are brought down to a more reasonable level and more support is provided for those in fuel poverty, these simple energy saving steps can make all the difference.’
