27th October 2016 - Islwyn MP slams boundary proposals at hearing

Islwyn MP slams boundary proposals at hearingIslwyn MP Chris Evans has slammed the initial proposals published by the Boundary Commission for Wales saying they do not make geographical sense, tear communities apart and must be changed during a public hearing today in Cardiff.

Under current proposals published by the Boundary Commission, as part of the Boundary Review 2018, the four existing constituencies of Islwyn, Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent and Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney would be condensed into three new constituencies.

Across Wales the number of Parliamentary constituencies will be reduced from 40 to 29 meaning Wales will have 11 fewer MPs.

The Boundary Commission is currently running an initial consultation into the plans which will close in early December this year. Written submissions can be made online on the Boundary Commission for Wales website, http://bcomm-wales.gov.uk

Mr Evans said: ‘I oppose the boundary changes in principle. I believe they are nothing more than a thinly-veiled attempt by the Government to gerrymander the political landscape in their favour, but if it is to be imposed on us we must make the best of it.

‘The initial proposals made by the boundary commission do not make geographical sense. They tear communities such as Blackwood, Cefn Fforest and Pontllanfraith apart. A number of my constituents have been in touch with me, deeply concerned with the proposals. I fully agree with and will continue to voice their concerns.

‘At the meeting today I strongly encouraged the Commission to consider proposals which make far greater geographical sense, and I would also encourage anyone concerned about the proposals to take part in the consultation.’
